8a. Quoting, Paraphrasing, and Summarizing

To shorten and greatly reduce the prolonged or "long-windedness" of some information and or data, I will below be using an example of an internet source quote, paraphrasing and summarizing it.

~Quote~

Source- Online (Internet)http://middlespot.com/
Title- "Aromatherapy is the therapeutic use of plant... aromatic essential oils to promote physical and psychological well-being.It is sometimes used in combination with massage and other therapeutic techniques as part of a holistic treatment approach." [The Definiton Of Aromatherapy]

Paraphrased version- Aromatherapy is the therapeutical and remedial (medical) usage of wild and organic plants either through inscents or body oils to heal the body and aid the overall longevity and stability or maintenance of health.

Summarized version- Aromatherapy helps individuals by incorporating physical treatment via scents that emanate from exotic plants in order to heal the body and mind in various ways which is all classified as holistic treatment or medicine.

7.b Evaluating Sources

I will evaluate three of my sources (One library book, a periodical article, and a website).

-BOOK SOURCE-

*MOLECULAR BASIS OF ODOR, By John E. Amoore
Western Regional Research Laboratory United States Department Of Agriculture in Albany, California. Publisher Charles C. Thomas, Springfield, Illinois U.S.A.

[Relevance within this book is at a maximum because all the information contained inside is applicable to what is being overviewed. This book in everyway is credible because there is a non-biased placement on the information meaning it is presented in a fashion that is informative for the reader, and not based on self-opinion only or assumptions of the material being presented. The author is a prestigious doctor affiliate with knowledge and expertise within the field he is writing in, and all of his information is thus afterward represented by equal sources of relevancy for evidence in proper form, format and characteristics and professionalism as well.]

-PERIODICAL/MAGAZINE ARTICLE SOURCE-

*Aroma therapy: Lavender Fragrance Is Sleep Inducing.

[The relevance of this article from a credible and peer-reviewed journal automatically signified to me that it would be relevant in the most upward perspectives due to the amount of sheer evidence to support the key points of the article and all throughout, the author is from a prestigious university (Brown), and the information pertains to the subject matter in a conclusive and understandible way, absent from self-absorbsion or misconstrued ideas.]

-INTERNET SOURCE (WEBSITE)-

*Aromaweb.com

[This website is respectably credible although it is not easily noticable at first due to the presentation and style (layout) of the website initially itself. The founder of the website, Miss Wendy Robbins, a researcher within the spectrum of alternative medicine (aroma therapy) specifically. The information once more refrained from judgemental or narrow "open-ended" theories that could be quite controversial and debatably insignificant to the topic. The data presented on this website details how aromatherapy works and its overviewed usages, practices and other notable notes of inquiry, there is evidential evidence, comprehensive in theory, and the timeline of information is current and updated.]

7.a Conducting Internet Research

Below, I will be listing the four differential types of search engines that I will be using for my primary research as a general concept and the data therein.

-SEARCH ENGINE PLATFORM-

{Gigablast.com as my choosen search engine base}
{I included the search engine math of +Aromatherapy Benefits to say that I wanted to find out about aromatherapy and it's benefits}
{I took useful advantage of the "+" operator within my keywords search to provide the most centerfold and direct results for me to avoid sources from sites that may not be virtually any help at all.}
{The date that this search was conducted on was of this evening, 3/15/09.}
{The rate of hits exceed my expectations, a count of +10 and more to be exact.}
{I would honestly say that all the results were at a relevancy of a medium 4 or slightly meniscule at that, but all fairly to adequately usable information in whole.}

-DIRECTORY-

{I was not able to record any information for the directory that I choose for this segment of the assignment. I tried Odyssearch, in which gave no results amongst the keywords that I was using (Aromatherapy and Risks.)}

-OTHER (MISCELLANEOUS)-

{DeepDyve.com as the website picked to evaluate}
{I used the keywords of Aromatherapy practices due to the fact that I also wanted to know more of this subject under these terms and I felt that I would gain significant inquiry from.}
{I made an attempt at just going with a plain style method of phrasing, since most of the others (boolean, etc.) seem to over-complicate some of the metacrawler and directory database search engines.}
{598 Hits were unveiled for this site in accumulation.}
{Hit relevance in my opinions would be at a rank of 4 again, since none seem to be at a highest feature yet of convenience, accessibility, etc.}

-METACRAWLER-
{SearchSalad, The Healthy Way To Search}
{Aroma,Therapy, Essential, & Oils were the keywords that I used in order to minimize upon distinct results rather than too broad of a search result string or findings}
{My search strategy was to use the entire phrase of "Aromatherapy" instead of individualizing it as that may have caused some discrepencies in my discoveries}
{The date of the search is of this evening, 3/15/09.}
{There were a total estimation of eight hits from this site.}
{From my own instinctual judgement, I would classify the information given from SearchSalad hits (all eight) as ranked 3-4, medium-range on the spectrum.}

6.c Planning Field Research

*********************************Field Research**********************************

I will be conducting the form of research known as a personal experience since I personally believe that it will be the best way and easiest method of collecting data on my subject the most efficiently as well. I can begin actually going out into town to get my data in person hopefully by the week after next, depending on how soon the individuals at a place in which Aromatherapy is practiced and offered responds to my phone call and the convenience of its location (near or far). I should document and record or make adequate and sufficient mental notes of what all happens and occurs to me during my experience at the local of my research study.

6.b Testing Your Assigned Search Tool

MY ASSIGNED SEARCH WEBSITE IS: ~Middlespot.com~

MIDDLESPOT.COM

-Resource Searched: Aromatherapy locations, Aromatherapy oils, Aromatherapy specifics,.

-Keywords Used: Aroma, Therapy, Locations, Oils, Specifics

-Search Strategies Used: So far, I only used the addition symbol from the search engine math however, unfortunately this website will not accept the search engine math such as when I used the addition (to include) terms within a particular search. I did use some boolean operators which gave me suprising results moreso than anything Google has ever done for me. (Aromatherapy and health, Aromatherapy and its benefits, Aromatherapy or alternative medicine, Aromatherapy not essential oils and Aromatherapy and its flaws.

-Date Of Search: Conducted as of this afternoon (02/4/09) at approx. 4:46 P.M.

-Number Of Hits: A total outcome of 256607 were brought into the search fray..

-Relevance Of Hits: On the classic scale of numerical rating, I will say that all of my hits had a relevancy rating of 4 or 5, being that they gave me information that I have yet to locate at any other website i've visited, Google included.

6.a Using Internet Search Tools

-I normally use Google dot com for my searches because it is a site that I depend on and trust primarily as a notable site for the facts that I delivers exact results for any term that I type within the search box however, I do wish that it was more specific in some areas as far as the direct subject phrase or terminology that I am looking for. Many instances, I discover that upon typing in a search word, the findings list is extensive yet after only a few pages worth of results, there appears to be no more related site links remaining for what it is that I am searching for indefinately. Google provides me with instant and expected discoveries of what it is that I would like to see as far as my searches and I rarely feel overwhelmed or that the website itself isn't quite as useful as it is proclaimed to be. I dislike the aspects and realizations of Google not giving the full results of certain topics and rather expending my search efforts by listing other non-related concepts that are far from the criteria and description of my desired subject matter.
